Events in Budapest

It has become a tradition to organise festivals in Budapest. The city offers a wide range of events every season.

Budapest Spring Festival (March-April)
A chain of cultural events in Budapest, that lasts for two weeks. In the course of the Festival, different cultural branches like opera, operetta, ballet, classical music, folklore programs, exhibitions are represented. More info about the event: www.fesztivalvaros.hu

Danube Carnival (June)
The event is held to introduce the traditions of music and dance of the settlements along the Danube. In Budapest folklore performances, open-air markets are held at the Vörösmarty square, on the Margitsziget and many other places.

Danube Water-carnival, Bridge Festival (June)
The Festival is one of the biggest water events in Europe, which is organised on the Danube between the Margit Bridge and the Chain Bridge ( 1,5 km ). There are all-day cultural, musical, sport programs on the water and performances in the air. During the closing ceremony, candles are floated on the water accompanied by a firework.

Budapest Búcsú (June)
The event is held to celebrate the departure of the last Soviet soldier from Hungary. Since then the event has become a tradition. On that weekend the city turns to a carnival area, with open-air light-music concerts, street dance and fancy-dress procession. More info about the festival: www.fesztivalvaros.hu

BudaFest Summer Music Festival (July-August)
At the beginning of August, the Hungarian State Opera House welcomes the BudaFest Summer Opera and Ballet Festival, where beside the internationally well-known Hungarian Opera-singers and ballet artists also foreign artists participate. Formula 1 Grand Prix (July-August)
The Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix is held about 30 Km outside Budapest on the Hungaroring in Mogyoród. More info about the event: www.hungaroring.hu

Sziget ( Island ) Festival (August)
The Sziget Festival in Budapest became one of the biggest music events of Middle-Europe. During the 7 days of the festival in early August, thousands of young people move to the Hajógyár Island with tents and enjoy the programs there. The number of visitors is more than 360.000. Celebration of handicrafts (August)
The event is held in the Buda Castle during the August Holidays (on the 20 th of August). Visitors can familiarise themselves with the traditional Hungarian handicrafts on an open-air market.

Holiday of the Foundation of the State (20 August )
During the celebration, there are fireworks all around Hungary, from which the one in Budapest is the biggest and most fascinating. The firework is fired out from the Gellert-hill and from a ship on the Danube, so the best enjoyable view is on one of the bridges, or at the Danube bank. During the Holiday and the previous and the following days, open-air fairs concerts are waiting for the visitors.

Budapest Parade (August)
The summer-closeing carnival of the city marches through on the one of the most beautiful routes of Budapest, from the Chain Bridge to the Heroes' Square. According to statistics, 500.000 visitors participate on the event. More info about the event: www.budapestparade.hu

Jewish Summer Festival (September)
The Festival is held at the end of August, beginning September with concerts, movie days, book days, gastronomical days and exhibitions in the Synagogue and other places in Budapest. More info about the festival: www.jewishfestival.hu

National Wine and Champagne Festival (September)
The Event is organised every year, early September in the castle of Budapest. During the festival, visitors can familiarise themselves with the best quality Hungarian wine regions and wines. Musical programs accompany the event. More info about the festival: www.winefestival.hu

Budapest Autumn Festival (October)
The event is recommended to those who are interested in contemporary arts. In the scope of the festival, dance and theatre performances, movies and photo exhibitions are offered. More info about the event: www.festivalcity.hu

Budapest Christmas (November-December)
During December fairs are organised in lots of places in Budapest. The one with the highest standard is held on Vörösmarty Square in the very heart of the city, where the products are pre-selected by a professional jury. New Year's Eve programs (December)
The Budapest New Year's Eve programs start already on the 30 th of December with the concert of the 100-member Gypsy Orchestra and the wine-tasting event.
