Geographical location:
The Bükk Wine Region is located at the southern, south-eastern foot of Bükk Mountains; it is bordered by the Eger Wine Region in the west and by the valleys of rivers Hernád and Sajó in the east. It is defended against cold winds by the range of Bükk Mountains in the north; whereas its southernmost point is Mezőkövesd and its region.

The endowments of the Bükk Wine Region
The range of Bükk Mountains defends the region against the cold winds in the north; and in the southern, south-eastern slopes the microclimate is favourable; although, for its situation sheltered from the wind, it is less rainy; therefore, in summer sometimes there is drought.
The soil is mostly rhyolite tuff like in the Eger Wine Region, Quaternary period loess is only found in the southern part of the region.
The history of the vine-region
We know little about the beginnings of viniculture. Grapes were mentioned in a 1313 document first; and it suggests that viniculture is an important branch of local agriculture. The vineyard mentioned above was given to the Order of St. Paul by István Ernyefi, the Lord of Diósgyőr Castle at that time. On 11 February 1503, King Ulászló confirmed the earlier wine patent of the town: "In Miskolc a stranger cannot sell wine; who breaks this law, shall be deprived of the wine taken with him". At that time on the slopes facing south around Diósgyőr and the hills of Miskolc north of Szinva Brook there were flourishing vineyards.
