Ear surgery

While for a comic huge ears may become a trademark and may bring millions of dollars, for the common people big ears may be an inconvenience. Those who choose to save themselves from the bantering, ear plastic surgery offers a perfect solution. The prominent ears are corrected in the first place, but it is also possible to have an outer ear and earlobe correction, part or entire supplement of ear deficiency, and restoration of other deformities. The patient’s psychic discontent may be abolished after the ear plastic surgery.

Surgeons advise having a prominent ear surgery correction after six years of age, but the surgery can take place anytime later, there is no upper age limit, it depends on the patient when he or she wishes to do the surgery. During the consultation the surgeon discusses the options with the patient that might affect his or her decisions with regard to the surgery, types of surgical anesthesia, possible complications, issues related to home care, phases of healing, possible problems during the healing process, and anything else that is necessary for the patient to determine which treatment option or procedure to chose. For skillful surgeons the routine treatment does not entail with extreme strain on the patient, and the surgery is usually done under local anesthesia. On the day of the surgery, the patient signs the consent form, then the necessary lab tests are done. Immediately before surgery the patient is premedicated with an injection containing analgesics and sedatives, thus the surgery is pain-free.

During the prominent ear surgery the ear cartilage is bended, or if needed a part of it is removed, and for the ear to preserve it’s new form, the ear is stabilized with internal stitches. During the surgery an incision is made at the back of the ear and the cartilage is reoriented into the desired position. If necessary an excision of appropriate size is made from the cartilage, which is then secured in the new position. Following hemostasis the skin is closed with cosmetic sutures. After the 1,5 hour surgery a pressure dressing is applied.

The surgery is commonly followed by 1-2 hours of observation, during which time the vital functions (blood pressure, urine output) stabilize, the sedative effects of the premedications wear off, and patients are able to leave the on their own feet, with the help of an escort. The elastic dressing placed following the procedure needs to stay in place for two weeks. Rest and elevation of the head is recommended during the first week. The stitches are taken out after 10-14 days and after the dressing is removed the patient can wash hair but swimming, going to the hairdresser’s and hair painting is advised only a month after the surgery.

Next to the most common ear plastic surgeries the surgeons often encounter with such cases where individual surgery techniques are needed. Outer ear abnormalities, like bat or flapper ears nowadays can be corrected easily, and the prominent ear surgery as well. The elongated, dangling, turned out or prominent earlobes and its size can also be corrected. For those boxers, wrestlers and common people who have had an accident with “cauliflower ears”  there also exists a correction surgery. When fluid collection in the outer ear occurs, it is important to contact a doctor immediately and have it treated. The doctor will evacuate the fluid and apply a compressing tie to the outer ear to reconnect the perichondrium and the cartilage. In these types of surgeries the above mentioned dressing is used, only in these cases it is changed several times, and if needed the fluid is removed again with an injection needle.
