In our twenties we believe that varicose veins are the problem of the older people. This however is not the situation. Half of the adult population suffers from varicose vein diseases, the occurrence of which the inherited veins and the weak vein walls are responsible, but varicose veins may also appear on pregnant women. Risk factors may also be unhealthy diet, the consequence of which is overweight, but the occurrence chance of varicose veins may be increased by lack of exercise or the intake of the contraceptive pills.

Varicose veins are caused by faulty valves and weakened walls within the veins. Normally, these one-directional valves keep the blood flowing efficiently against gravity up toward the heart. But when these valves fail to function properly, the blood pools, pressure builds up, and the veins become weak, enlarged and twisted. In such cases the patient may experience pain, sense of tiredness and tension. In these enlarged veins deep vein thrombosis may occur, but in more serious cases due to low oxygen supply in the skin ulceration may occur in the legs. This is why the experts believe that it is very important to have this varicose vein treatment in time, since this can be not only a beauty treatment but also later no serious varicose vein health problems will occur in the future.

The varicose vein treatment is always preceded by a consultation with the surgeon, where the state of the disease is allocated as well as how it should be treated. In milder cases the surgeons try to solve the problem with injections, this procedure is suitable for smaller varicose vein treatments. During the procedure such medication is injected into the veins, which a chemical that damages the vein walls. As a result, scar tissue forms which closes off the affected vein. Other stronger veins take over and the treated vein, which is no longer filled with blood, becomes less visible. For the perfect result, several injection treatments may be needed.

More serious varicose veins can be removed by a surgery, but before the operation the surgeon has to examine how intact is the patient’s deep vein system, and in what condition are the biggest valves which are located between the two vein systems. This routine varicose vein treatment is done under local or general anesthesia. During this 15-60 minute long procedure two small cuts are made and through these the varicose veins are removed, these cuts heal without any scarring and there is no need for stitches either. A firm bandage will be placed on the leg instantly after the operation, and in order for the scars to heal perfectly a lot of resting and minimal physical work is advised for about a month, and standing for a long time is also not advised.

The firm bandage will be removed in about a week after the operation, but an elastic garment has to worn until the bloodsheds cease. The total recovery may take up to a month, but previous varicose vein area will be perfect from the medical and aesthetical aspects. However the patient has to keep weight under control, exercise, eat a healthy diet high in fiber, and try to stick to loose comfortable clothing when possible in order to prevent further formation of varicose veins.
